My students in the International Trade Class (Year 1) took pictures of the English language used by high-street shops in Madrid. They tweeted them using the hushtag #shoppingepj and their group number. Some students also tested the new Google translate App. Now we need to analyse the information. These questions can help you:
Where were the signs?
What kind of signs were they?
What is the target?
Why do you think they are in English?
What did you learn by working on this project?
Don't forget to prepare the information to show it on the English Corner!!
Can you imagine trying to take the metro in Beijing with all the signs in Chinese? The new App launched by google could be really helpful when you visit countries where you do not know the language.
Are you interested? Watch this video by The Guardian trying the application in Times Square.
As you can see it does not work for Chinese jet ;)
Work in class:
What situations do you think translators can be useful?
What problems can you have using translators?
What other tools can we use if we speak the language?
This years' WTO
Public Forum opened on 1 October 2014 under the theme "Why trade matters
to everyone". The opening session featured the video "Trade matters
to me", which shows the importance to trade in our daily lives. You can
watch it with your students and reflex about the origin of the things we use in
our everyday life.
Tomorrow I
will participate in a round table talking about innovation in the BEDA
Programme in the Udima’s II Congress about bilingualism. Here you can find the programme:
This is one of the most watched
conferences on TED, the website where you can find speeches about almost any
subject. I really think it is interesting to analyse why it is one of the most
popular ones.
Do we need to
change something in our classes? People do care about education.
Do you remember the interactive adventure books we used to read a long time ago? Did you enjoy them?
Watch this video! If you are a teacher you can use this activity to work the conditionals: What do you think it will happen if we decide to ...? What would you do if you were...? Students love it!
